What is ketamine?
Ketamine is a safe, legal, and highly effective psychedelic medicine being used to treat depression, trauma and anxiety. It is a dissociative anesthetic (dissociation being a sense of disconnection from one’s ordinary reality and sense of self) that is commonly used in surgeries and hospitals worldwide. At a sub-anesthetic dose, ketamine produces a non-ordinary state of consciousness (NOSC) that produces psychedelic and euphoric effects. Ketamine is showing success in providing symptom relief for depression, anxiety, and other mental health conditions when administered in conjunction with psychotherapy.
What is ketamine-assisted psychotherapy?
Ketamine-assisted psychotherapy is a modality that combines the support of psychotherapy with the medicinal effects of ketamine. Ketamine serves as a catalyst to bring forward therapeutic content and non-ordinary states of consciousness, while the psychotherapist is present to support clients with deepening and integrating these experiences.
Who is it for?
Ketamine-assisted psychotherapy is an alternative treatment option for people seeking relief from depression, anxiety, trauma, or other major life challenges. This modality can work in conjunction with other forms of treatment, or can be used when other forms of treatment have not achieved one’s desired results or efficacy. It is also for people who are interested in depth work, spiritual experience, and personal exploration.
Is it a safe treatment?
Yes. Ketamine-assisted psychotherapy is a safe treatment when administered and supervised by a professional team of psychotherapists and medical personnel.
What does the overall process look like?
In your initial consult, we will discuss treatment options and help you make an informed decision about whether ketamine treatment is right for you. Prior to ketamine treatment, clients are required to attend a medical and psychological screen to identify potential risks and benefits of the medicine work. Following this, we provide preparation sessions to set goals and orient to the ketamine sessions.
Ketamine sessions are typically 2-3 hours long. These sessions are tailored to each individual. Ketamine is administered either orally with lozenges, or intramuscularly via injection. The direct experience of ketamine can last from 30 minutes to an hour and a half, depending on dosage. Dosage will be determined by our medical team and discussed with you prior to your session.
While some individuals choose to have one ketamine session, others schedule 2-3 sessions over the course of a month, or choose to revisit the treatment monthly.
