Psilocybin Mushroom Support ServicesMedicinal Mindfulness Foundation Psilocybin Mushroom Support Services
In November of 2022, Colorado voters legalized the personal use of dimethyltryptamine, ibogaine, mescaline (excluding peyote), psilocybin, and psilocin (aka natural medicines). While sale of natural medicine is still restricted, persons twenty-one years of age or older can now legally ingest and use natural medicines in Colorado for personal use.
Medicinal Mindfulness celebrates this historic moment in psychedelic history by offering support services to those engaged in personal use of natural medicines.
Medicinal Mindfulness’ personal use services include bona fide harm reduction, therapy, and support services. Medicinal Mindfulness also offers beneficial community-based use and healing services to those individuals interested in using natural medicines in a group or community setting.

What are natural medicines?
Psilocybin is a hallucinogenic alkaloid found in nearly 200 strains of mushrooms that grow on every continent. The body converts psilocybin into psilocin, which is the main psychoactive compound. There is significant evidence to suggest that this compound has been used for ritual, medicinally, and recreationally for at least 12,000 years. We can find depictions of their use on murals in Australia that archeologists have dated to 10,000 BCE and in Spain in 4,000 BCE. There is a history of their ceremonial use in Central America by the Aztec and Mayans, in Siberia, in ancient Greece, ancient Egypt and across Europe. Since their popularization in the 1950s in Western culture they were nicknamed “magic mushrooms” and they can be found wild and cultivated all over the world. Psilocybin and psilocin have been thoroughly studied for their potential benefits to mental health by reputable universities such as Harvard, Stanford, Cambridge and are actively being studied at John Hopkins University.
Who is this treatment for?
Initial clinical studies suggest that psilocybin is of benefit to people struggling with:
- Treatment-Resistant Depression
- Anxiety
- Addictions
- Obsessive Compulsive Disorder
- PTSD
- End of life struggles
Studies have also shown that psilocybin is a powerful nootropic, meaning that it aids the brain in neuroplasticity, whole brain connectivity, creative thinking, and problem solving.
Many speculate (no clinical data but rooted in wisdom from many cultures across the world) that it may be effective for a wide range of other applications such as:
- Spiritual growth
- Exploration of your human potential
- Initiatory practices
- Ego dissolution and unity experiences
- Post-traumatic growth work
- Moving through significant life transitions
- Creative problem solving
- Aiding the brain’s neuroplasticity
- Whole brain thinking
- Positive changes to autism disorder
- Speech impediments
- Healing phobias
- Repairing spinal injuries
There have been limitations on studying the full potential of this medicine given its Schedule 1 designation. It’s our hope that with the decriminalization propositions passing in Oregon and most recently in Colorado, it will lead to much more research and data.
What tends to happen to people on this natural medicine?
Within 20-40 minutes after ingestion of psilocybin, clients often report:
- Heightened physical sensations of touch, vision, hearing, taste, and smell.
- Heightened emotional responses that can range from grief catharsis and energetic discharge to intense joy, love, peace, and awe.
- Increased heart rate (which can be modulated with guidance and breath)
- Heightened sense of somatic (body held) emotions and trauma
- Visual distortion and spatial disorientation (eyes open)
- Vivid internal visualization (eyes closed)
- Distortion of time, space, and reality
- Heightened awareness of self, life, world, spirit, and connectivity.
- Whole brained thinking, creativity, and access to insight
- A decrease in activity in our brain’s default mode (psychologists would call the ego)
- Non-dual experiences, sense of unity, connection to larger Spirit, God, Buddha-Nature, etc.
There is a wide variety of strains that will vary the duration of types of effects. A safe estimate is that a journey lasts between 6-8 hours.
Is psilocybin a safe medicine?
Research shows that psilocybin is generally very safe for many people when administered in controlled settings. Research also shows that psilocybin can be unsafe for people using certain pharmaceutical medications.
The positive of psilocybin as a medicine is that it’s quite powerful and has a lengthy duration for some deep and transformative work to occur. The negative is similar, just how powerful and long the experience is (sessions generally last 6-8 hours). Psilocybin doesn’t always allow for a lot of personal agency and control, although your guide can be instrumental to steering things in healthy ways. But once you’re on the ride, it’s not really possible to get off until it’s over. For these kinds of reasons, psilocybin may not be a perfect fit for everyone. And for many, the equally powerful yet shorter experiences, such as Cannabis-Assisted Psychedelic Therapy or Ketamine-Assisted Psychedelic Therapy, may be a better option.

What is the difference between taking psilocybin with my friends versus with a professional?
It is our strong belief that the MM Foundation model offers safe, reliable and beneficial results. There is a big difference between having a recreational experience with these medicinal compounds versus a guided one. A reasonably safe recreational experience isn’t extremely difficult to create on your own. By contrast, a guided one that addresses deeper problems and concerns, is much harder to guide by oneself. In our experience, it can be quite difficult to stay with the discomforts that are often part of healing, and/or stay steady when there may be an instinct to get up and pull away from the content at hand. Without proper guidance one may have a higher likelihood to have what feels like stuckness or an unfinished/incomplete experience.
Furthermore, we teach that the journey begins with the preparation sessions beforehand and continues with integration after the psychedelic experience. The preparation can be instrumental to the outcome of a journey, and oftentimes the most delicate and important work actually takes place afterwards during the integration phase. Having a relationship with a professional therapist or guide that includes this in their work with you can be really important and rewarding in order to have a powerful and therapeutic psychedelic experience.
